There is a long history of links between Colwyn Bay and The Congo. The Colwyn Bay Congo Institute had nearly 100 African students study before returning to Africa. Amongst these students were the first President of Malawi, the first Nigerian medical officer, doctors, nurses, teachers, barristers and the college founder and mentor to Nelson Mandela. Chief Bikebi was presented with a plaque in recognition of his visit and he presented a letter from the Mayor of Matadi which outlined some of these historic connections.
